“The Soul of the Innocent Cries”: Ɔkrɔnkrɔnyi Nyame Somafo Yawoh on Justice and Wrongful Convictions

During the December 2025 RABBI Ogyebea Festival at Okumfi Otuam, Ɔkrɔnkrɔnyi  Nyame Somafo Yawoh engaged members of the Ghanaian press and delivered messages he described as being of profound spiritual importance to the nation.

Among the issues he addressed was what he characterized as the miscarriage of justice within Ghana’s judicial system.

He stated that he has no objection to the conviction and incarceration of offenders who have lawfully violated the laws of the land and have been duly tried and punished. Such cases, he said, do not raise any spiritual concern. The problem arises, however, when individuals are imprisoned without adequate proof or proper investigation.

According to him, God’s law requires that when a person commits an offense, there must be two or more witnesses, and that these, together with an impartial adjudicating authority, constitute a sufficient tribunal for conviction. He lamented that this standard, he said, is often not observed in practice in Ghana.

He further stated that approximately 30 percent of persons currently incarcerated in Ghana’s prisons and correctional institutions are innocent of the offenses for which they are being detained.

In many cases, he said, accusations are fabricated against innocent individuals, and due to poor or compromised investigations, such persons end up in prison. He added that in some instances, police investigators accept bribes from accusers and facilitate the conviction of the wrongfully accused. He also mentioned that some judges accept bribes and wrongfully convict defendants, thereby compounding the injustice.

Ɔkrɔnkrɔnyi Nyame Somafo Yawoh also revealed that he recently visited the Swedru Correctional Facility, where he interacted with both inmates and staff.

He cautioned correctional officers against the mistreatment of inmates, warning that when a person is wrongfully convicted, the individual’s soul “cries out.” He said that if such suffering is compounded by abuse or neglect within the correctional system, the spiritual consequences would work severely against any officer responsible for the mistreatment.
